Spotlight: NSF Director Visits the MagLab

The Director of the National Science Foundation, France Cordova visited Florida State University on March 7th, and met with Gov. Scott, FSU President John Thrasher and Vice President for Research at FSU Gary Ostrander.
The meeting focused on the research being conducted at Florida State University including the MagLab, as well as at other universities in Florida. As part of her visit, Cordova toured the MagLab facility, which she stated she looked forward to the most.

Save the Date: The Tallahassee Science Festival is October 28th
The 6th Annual Tallahassee Science Festival will be taking place on Saturday, October 28th, 2017 at Kleman Plaza.
The event features over 125 exhibits each year, and is being hosted in partnership with Tallahassee Community College, Tallahassee Scientific Society, Leon County Schools, The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory and Innovation Park of Tallahassee. The Tallahassee Science Festival was founded by Bill and Elaine Grace.

JA Big Bend is Hosting their Golf Classic on Friday, April 7th at Seminole Golf Club
The Junior Achievement Big Bend will be hosting their Golf Classic on Friday April 7th at the Seminole Golf Club- across the street from Innovation Park! The event will include a complete program of special events, 18 holes of golf (including cart), lunch, dinner, silent auction items and awards (Long Putt Challenge, Longest Drive Contest and Closest to the Pin Challenge). Participation will directly support Junior Achievement Big Bend.
JA is a volunteer-delivered, K-12 program that fosters work-readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy skills, and uses experiential learning to inspire students to dream big and reach their potential. JA students develop the skills they need to experience the realities and opportunities of work and entrepreneurship in the 21st-century global marketplace.
Through the innovative partnerships between the business community, educators, and volunteers, JA impacted over 4.8 million U.S. students in more than 209,000 classrooms during 2015-2016.

EEP Class 13 SOLD OUT and the new Entrepreneur’s Club at Innovation Park
We are happy to announce that Class 13 of the Entrepreneurial Excellence Program is completely sold out! We are now taking applications for Class 14, which will be taking place in the fall. The Entrepreneurial Excellence Program is a ten-class course that teaches a foundation of knowledge needed in order to run a successful business. Additionally, EEP Alums automatically become members of the new Entrepreneur’s Club @ Innovation Park, an organization where entrepreneurs can engage, collaborate and network with like-minded entrepreneurs. The Club meets on a semi-annual basis, and offers additional seminars to tackle other challenges entrepreneurs encounter but is not covered in the 10-class course. MagLab Open House a Success
The MagLab hosted their open house on Saturday, February 25th. This year’s theme Science and the Movies was a big hit with attendees of all ages. The Open House played host to about 8,000 attendees this year and featured over 100 demonstrations including a green screen experience and an area called The Hogwarts Academy of Muggle Science for Harry Potter buffs.
In addition to the Mag Lab’s Open House, other facilities including COAPS, HPMI and the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering participated this year’s event.
The TechGrant Application deadline has passed. We are currently in the preliminary screening process, and will announce our Elevator Pitch Night Finalists on Wednesday, April 12th.
This year’s Elevator Pitch Night will take place on Wednesday, May 17th from 5:30pm-7:30pm at the Goodwood Museum Carriage House. This is a free event for the community, where we award up to $25,000 in grants to help early stage companies commercialize their technology. This event has been a integral part of our community’s growing entrepreneurial ecosystem.
