Spotlight: Winners Named for the 2017 TechGrant Program
Melanie Simmons, President of KynderMed took home the 1st place prize during Elevator Pitch Night
On May 17th, Innovation Park hosted their annual TechGrant Elevator Pitch Night at Goodwood Museum and Gardens. During the event which was co-presented by Danfoss Turbocor and Hancock bank, five local early stage companies competed for a chance to win an up to $15,000 grant to use towards commercializing their technology.
KynderMed, who has developed a sleep mask to help prevent preterm birth in pregnant women, took home the 1st prize of $15,000. KynderMed will use this grant to help get through the next round of FDA clinical trials.
Sensatek Propulsion Technology Inc., who has developed wireless sensors for gas turbines to help reduce downtime and costly repairs of turbines, took home the second prize of $10,000. Sensatak will use their grant to develop a digital demonstration of their product, which can lead to working with Fortune Global 500 Companies like Siemens Energy.
Danfoss Turbocor, the pioneer and leader of oil-free, magnetic bearing, variable speed centrifugal compressors for high-efficiency air-conditioning chillers, was recognized with two prestigious awards for its innovative Turbocor® technology.
On April 20th, the company was named a Bronze Winner in the Edison Awards. The Edison Awards is a program that honors innovation and excellence to new products and services. Danfoss was recognized as part of the Energy and Sustainability category.
Danfoss Turbocor was also recognized during the 2017 China Refrigeration Expo with their one of the year’s coveted “Innovation Awards” for its Turbocor® TG310 compressors.

Applications are being accepted for Entrepreneurial Excellence Program Class 14
Innovation Park is now accepting applications for Class 14 of the Entrepreneurial Excellence Program. This is a 10-class program that helps local start-ups gain a foundation of knowledge to help them build a successful business.
The class is limited to twelve companies with up to two members from each company invited to attend.

FSU hires eminent scientist to join Applied Superconductivity Center
Florida State University recently announced they’ve added another eminent scientist to join the Applied Superconductivity Center (ASC). Lance Cooley, an accomplished expert in the field of applied superconductivity will join the faculty in August.
In addition to his position at the ASC, Cooley will also have a faculty appointment in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. He will begin his teaching duties in the Spring 2018 semester.

FSU names new director of Florida Center for Advanced Aero-Propulsion

Florida State University recently announced they have nam ed a new director for the Florida Center for Advanced Aero-Propulsion (FCAAP). FAMU-FSU College of Engineering Professor, Lou Cattafesta has been chosen to lead FCAAP into the future. According to FSU News, Cattafesta has excellent scholarship and experience as a researcher, teacher and mentor, which makes him an ideal candidate for the position.
