Spotlight: The FSU Department of Anthropology is moving to Innovation Park
Innovation Park of Tallahassee is happy to announce that the Florida State University Department of Anthropology will soon occupy 11,000 square feet of space located in the Johnson Building at 2035 E. Paul Dirac Drive, Tallahassee, FL 32310. The Department of Anthropology’s official move-in date is July 31, 2017.
“The Department of Anthropology is going to be a valuable new resident to the Park community,” remarked Ron Miller, Executive Director of the Leon County R&D Authority. “Innovation Park has many preeminent research and development organizations that focus on industries like magnetics, advanced power systems, and high-performance materials, just to name a few. Many of these organizations collaborate on different projects, and we look forward to our current residents and visitors being able to connect with our new resident.”
The Department of Anthropology will conduct its research and other important activities at the Park. This will include the work being done at Mission San Luis by Dr. Tanya Peres, as well as work being done by Dr. Jessi Halligan on the Aucilla Paleoindian sites. There will also be additional faculty joining the department to conduct other research at the Innovation Park location. The department also plans to host office hours, and present research seminars at the Innovation Park location.
“We are very excited to be moving to Innovation Park, and be neighbors with the Southeast Archaeological Center (SEAC) again,” stated Dr. Rochelle Marrinan, Chair of the Florida State University Department of Anthropology. “We have a great working relationship with SEAC, and we currently collaborate with them on various Park projects. It will be great to be in close proximity again.”
The National Park Service Southeast Archaeological Center moved from Macon, Georgia to Tallahassee, Florida in 1972, due to its express interest to be near the Florida State University Department of Anthropology. SEAC originally occupied space next to the Department on the main FSU campus. From 1972 until October 1995, SEAC maintained close association with the Department by sharing space, personnel, expertise and equipment. But as time passed, SEAC required additional space and in 1995 moved to its current location in Innovation Park, where all of the organization’s offices are currently located. SEAC continues its historic support functions as well as providing technical assistance and engaging in partnership projects both within and outside of the National Park Service.
The FSU Department of Anthropology’s arrival marks a progressive time at Innovation Park. It is the second organization in the past year to move into the Park. In early 2017, local startup, Sensatek Propulsion Technologies set up its offices in the Knight Administrative Building with hopes to expand into a larger space within the Park in the near future.
Danfoss Turbocor Celebrated the Grand Opening on their Application Development Center

On June 28th, Danfoss Turbocor celebrated its grand opening of the “Engineering Tomorrow” Application Development Center. The event was attended by many top Danfoss team members including the President of Danfoss North America.
The 22,000 sq. ft. space includes three fully-automated test facilities capable of accommodating residential and commercial air-conditioning and heat pump equipment, including rooftop units, from 1.2 to 50 tons and air-cooled chillers up to 150 tons. Additionally, the lab will be able to test mildly flammable refrigerants at global nameplate voltages, with real-time data acquisition and performance analysis
The Application Development Center will help customers improve performance through system-level testing. According to Stefan Pietrek, senior director- global applications at Danfoss, “Our objective is to make each of our Application Development Centers a place where local Danfoss application experts work with our customers in a collaborative, innovative environment that accelerates technology and propels business. This ADC is designed to support testing specifically for the North American air-conditioning market.”

Just a reminder- The MagLab hosts public tours every month
Each month the Mag Lab hosts a tour of its facility for any interested member of the public. The tours take place on the third Wednesday of every month at 11:30am. No reservations are required to attend, but attendees must wear close-toed shoes and check in at reception.
The tours include a general overview of the Mag Lab and the research conducted there, as well as explanations of the different types of magnets used, including resistive magnets, superconducting magnets, pulsed magnets and the world-record hybrid magnet. If you have never taken the opportunity to tour your Innovation Park neighbor, it’s time!
